How do the margin notes work?

Phrases worth a note carry a small red numeral. Tap one and the note opens under the text. A note is one of three kinds: a gloss for a word that has changed meaning, context for a custom, place, or event, or a reminder of who a character is.

Each note is written for a reader who has reached that chapter and no further, so it never mentions anything you have not read yet.

Why does a phrase or chapter have no note?

Notes are prepared for each chapter ahead of time and checked against the chapter text. A note that does not match the text is dropped rather than shown, so some chapters have fewer notes than others. Very short chapters, prefaces, and contents pages may have none.

If a chapter that should have notes shows none at all, check your connection and reopen the chapter. If they still do not appear, email us the book and chapter.

How do I get an explanation of a paragraph?

Press and hold the paragraph. A short, plain explanation of what is happening in it appears, drawn from the chapter you are on. It needs a connection and takes a few seconds.

What is the daily allowance?

Reading is free: every book and every chapter. Free readers can open 15 notes and explanations a day, counted together. The count resets each day, and Preferences shows how many you have left. Premium removes the limit.

Where are the lines I kept?

On the Notes tab. Kept lines are your commonplace book, filed under their book and chapter, and you can share any of them as a card. They are stored on your device, so deleting the app deletes them.

Premium and billing

Premium is a subscription billed by Apple. To see or cancel it, open the Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions.

I paid, but Premium is not unlocked

Open Preferences in Salon and tap Restore purchases. Make sure you are signed in to the App Store with the Apple Account you paid with. If that does not work, email us the date of the charge and we will sort it out.

Something wrong with a note?

Notes and explanations are generated by AI. If one is wrong, confusing, or gives away something ahead of where you are, tap Report a concern in Preferences, or email us the book, chapter, and note. We read every report.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no sign-in. Your reading place, kept lines, and settings stay on your device. The privacy policy explains what the app sends to our server and how to have it deleted.
